How does Paton develop gender roles in the novels? How are the genders treated differently by Paton? How are the genders treated differently by South African society? What are the effects of these differences? Use at least two examples from the text in your answer.

PAton uses Steven to help developthe gender roles in this book. Paton doesn't seem to have an opinion on gender roles, he just seems to be stating how things were at this time period. In South Africa, it seems as if the people focus less on sexism and more on racism. One example of this from the text is how Steven tells his wife to do everything for him. Another is how the Johannesburg father mails a letter for Steven's sister instead of letting her write a letter for herself.

Journal for TOMORROW (on your blog): How are the power structures in Lord of the Flies different from those in The Power of One? How are they different? Be specific. Write at least 8 sentences.
In the Lord of the Flies, the power isn't a struggle between countries fighting for power, it's boys fighting for survival. In "The Power of One", the struggle comes from more than person vs. person. there is struggle between races, between countries, between politics, and between boxers, but that's just it being a movie with sports. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph never had to fight racism or politicains, but PK does in "The Power of One". PK has to struggle against Nazis, racism, death, prison, and adult ignorance. However, Ralph only needs to worry about Jack and survival. But the situations are similar in the way that PK and Ralph both have the mminority of people in their corners for lack of better terms.
Find an element or technique in the first key passage. Then, write a paragraph identifying the technique and explaining its effect. Your paragraph should be at least 7 sentences in length. Post the paragraphs on your blog before class starts tomorrow.
The effect of using so much odd diction in the first passage is that is shows how the book will be written. This prepares the reader for level of reader, as well as shows how the boys are thinking. The reason the author uses this odd diction is to be more explanitory. By doing this, he shows more than just odd dcition, he starts to get into imagery. By having these elements overlap in this way, he shows how truly diverse and diverse the book will, in the case of diction and explanation. "the fair haired boy". This diction is very odd, but as I have already said, it is also imagery.
