How does Paton develop gender roles in the novels? How are the genders treated differently by Paton? How are the genders treated differently by South African society? What are the effects of these differences? Use at least two examples from the text in your answer.
PAton uses Steven to help developthe gender roles in this book. Paton doesn't seem to have an opinion on gender roles, he just seems to be stating how things were at this time period. In South Africa, it seems as if the people focus less on sexism and more on racism. One example of this from the text is how Steven tells his wife to do everything for him. Another is how the Johannesburg father mails a letter for Steven's sister instead of letting her write a letter for herself.
